This is one of 3 known P-rr-tt families that originated in Cork, Ireland, and migrated to the Americas. The other two are the descendants of Richard Parrott who settled in New York and Nathaniel Perrott who also settled in New Brunswick. Without YDNA testing, it is not possible to know if these three families are part of a larger P-rr-tt famiy in Cork.

John, the founder of this lineage, and his brother, Matthew Jr., came from Bandon, Cork, Ireland to Barthel, New Brunswick, Canada in 1817. They moved to Coschocton, OH in 1837. Their father was Matthew Parrott, who according to the family history, descended from Karey Parrott, who "came over from England with William of Orange as an officer and helped whip the rebel Irish at the Battle of the Boyne. For his services in that war he received a large amount of land on the Eastern coast of Ireland" in 1690. The history continues, "the tradition in the family - seven and a half plow lands, the precise number of acres I cannot give, but it must be large; but it did us no good from the fact that a squanderer of a son named William Kearry, spent all the property except one half Plow land that one daughter got as a portion." A plowland, also known as a carucate, was 120 acres in size.

A century and a half later, their descendant John Parrott, left his adopted home in Ohio and moved Holton, KS in 1858. Some of his children accompanied him; others dispersed to Iowa and California. His brother, Matthew, had no issue.

Of John's children, his son John Bateman became an engineer in Iowa who went bankrupt building a railroad. He then joined his family in Kansas, and became a captain in the Union army during the Civil War, and after the war was over, a revenue collector. Son Matthew also moved to Kansas.

Son William Karey moved to California, where his son, Karey Lee established the Parrott Carriage Co. Newspaper accounts as the 19th century was coming to a close suggest the company was having difficulties. In hindsight, the era of the automobile was dawning, and the days were limited for horse-drawn carriages.

The Parrott Carriage Manufacturing Co. was established in California in the late 1800's by family member, Karey Lee Parrott. Source: Scripophily

Finally, son Robert B. became an attorney in Iowa. In 1864, he moved to Virginia City, Montana, where he set up his law practice.

Business card for Robert B. Parrott printed in the Montana Post, 11 Mar 1865.

Once in Montana, Robert B. prospected on the weekends, and the following year discovered one of the richest copper deposits in the area. His find became known as the Parrott Copper Mine, and became the richest copper mine in the world. It eventually became the Parrot Silver and Copper Company, but not until after Robert had sold off his interests in the company, having failed to profit from his find. He returned to Des Moines, Iowa, where he died in 1904. His assetts were scarcely valued at $6000 at the time of his death.

Today, family descendants go by Parrot, Parrott, and Parratt. The family reconstruction remains very incomplete, and additional research is needed. Better documentation is also needed for its Irish forebears. Online trees suggest that Richard, another brother, remained in Canada, where several more descendants must be around today!

    Obituary:
The Holton Recorder, September 19, 1897, posted Ancestry by tstahl198 to the Hubbard-Wegman Family Tree

John Parrott, one among the old settlers of Jackson county, died of old age, at his residence in this city, yesterday at 12 o'clock m. [sic] Mr. Parrott was born near Bandon, Ireland, March, 1894 [sic -probably should be 1794], and was, at his death, past eighty-five years of age. In 1819, about a year after his marriage, he removed from Ireland to Barthel, New Brunswick, and shortly after arriving at his new home, embraced Christianity and joined the Wesleyan Methodist church, in which he was an active laborer, contributing largely to the building of the first Wesleyan church in Barthel. In the year 1847 he removed with his family to Ohio, and from thence to this county in 1859. After coming to the United States he joined the M. E. church, continuing in the same a faithful, conscientious member until his death. He lived with his wife, who survives him, a little over sixty-one years. The deceased was an honest, hard working farmer, who in the course of his life cleared two large farms in the forest and improved one on the prairie. He impressed everyone with whom he came in contact that he was a faithful, zealous Christian and one who enjoyed his religion and esteemed it above every earthly good. His last hours were hours of triumph. Among his last words uttered was a verse of the last hymn written by Charles Wesley: -
    In age and feebleness extreme
Who shall a sinful worm redeem?
Jesus my only hope thou art.
    Strength of my flesh and failing heart;
O, could I catch a smile from thee
And drop into eternity. The funeral takes place from the M. E. church this afternoon, at 2 o'clock.

    John Parrott to Son
Lorinda Parrott, wife of George Jackson Brown, was one of the family of John Parrott who came from New Brunswich in 1838 and settled near Warsaw in Coshocton County, Ohio. A key to the history of the Parrott family is contained in a letter written by John Parrott to his son, preserved by Dora Brown Conner, of Denver, and loaned to her brother, O.C. Brown, in 1916. The following is a true copy:

    GRANDFATHER JOHN PARROTT'S LETTER
My Dear Son: Holton (KS) April 18, 1870

You desire to know something of my history, and that of my ancestors. As to the latter, I can trace them no further back than the days of King William the Third, Duke of Normandy. The first of my ancestors, Karey Parrott by name, came over from England with William of Orange as an officer and helped whip the rebel Irish at the Battle of the Boyne. For his services in that war he received a large amount of land on the Eastern coast of Ireland; the tradition in the family - seven and a half plow lands, the precise number of acres I cannot give, but it must be large; but it did us no good from the fact that a squanderer of a son named William Kearry, spent all the property except one half Plow land that one daughter got as a portion; the rest of the family had to get their living like Adam's posterity when driven out of Eden.

The branch of our extensive family with whom I am more immediately connected by name, Richard Parrott, my grandfather, Matthew Parrott, my father, both born near Bandon, County Cork, Ireland. Both my ancestors lived and died on the same premises. Myself and my brother Matthew occupied the same until we left for America.

Now commences a new scene. I settled in the province of New Brunswick and commenced clearing the forest. Her I found that it was not good that man should be alone. I found a helpmeet in all points, one from my native land, from my immediate neighborhood; one that would handle the distaff and one that her children would rise up to call her blessed. (Dorendo Bateman) Besides our religious sentiments were the same - old fashioned Methodists over fifty years.

You want to know my age - 22 years in my native land and 22 years in New Brunswick, and about 22 years in Ohio, and about 12 years in Kansas. Mamma is 72. You want to know my father's age - 63; and when he died - 1813.

All my ancestors as far as I know were of the Protestant Episcopal Church. If you want to have any other particulars, write and you shall be gratified. Excuse my way of doing business, and I believe you would if you were to know one half the pain I have in my right arm, and how dull my ideas are. I must stop. Write soon.
    (signed) John Parrott, Sr.

(P.S.) Well, John, I do not know your reason for requesting such minute detail of our ancestry. Your forefathers from your mother's side were a race of high church men of the Protestant Episcopal Church; an industrious and well doing people, and great opposers of the tyrannical Church of Rome, down from the Reformation, originally from William's army. But I got a good Methodist from among them. Now John, as to the date of the Battle of the Boyne, I do not remember, as I have not the history of England by me, but I think it was about the middle of the 17th Century; look and see. The perusal will pay as William was to the Protestants of Ireland what Washington was to America.

The family here are all well. Matthew is living in his new house. Victor and Susie have removed to their mansion. Dolly and myself are left alone. Write soon. Mother joins me in love to all.

    (Signed) John and Dolly Parrott

    John Parrott 1794 - 1879

John Parrott lived to enjoy his surroundings in Kansas for twenty years. He died in Holton, June 18, 1879. His last words were of deep religious belief and good cheer. He died singing a stanza of the last hymn written by Charles Wesley:

    "In age and feebleness extreme,
Who shall a sinful worm redeem?
Jesus, my only hope thou are,
Strength of my life and failing heart,
O, could I catch a smile from thee,
    And drop into eternity."

Among John Parrott's accomplishments was the claiming of two large farms from the primeval forest, and the establishment of a third on the Kansas prairie. He was the father of thirteen children - nine of whom were born in New Brunswick; one, Hester Ann, on shipboard on Lake Erie; and three on the farm at Warsaw in Ohio.

    More excerpts:

Upon arrival in New Brunswick ... the Parrotts cleared land near Bathurst on the Bay of Chaleur. Their cottage was on the shore of the bay, so so near that from the door a magnificent view of the bay was to be had, a memory which never faded from the minds of the children, even that of little Dorendo (later called Lorinda ), who was but four years old when the family removed to Ohio. Lorinda often wrote and spoke of this childhood picture, her father's flock of sheep on the greensward before the cottage and in tbe background the "beautiful Bay of Chaleur".
    <>

"Another memory of the cottage home in the clearinng by the Bay of Chaleur was the unwelcome visit of Indians. One occasion impressed itself upon the minds of the children and the story was often retold. William was a baby, a chubby little fellow at his mother's (ie, Dorendo Bateman Parrott) knee. The father of the family was absent from home on a business trip which required several days. It was dusk in the evening when Grandmother Parrott (ie, Dorendo Parrott Bateman) heard a tapping at the window. The frightened little family saw there looking in, the faces of several Indians in paint and feathers. The lndians then came in the door and began looking about at what they could find. They soon located flour, meal, sugar and bacon, which they appropriated. An Indian approached Grandmother Parrott where she sat in terrified silence, holding her baby close to her. The Indian took hold of one of the baby's fat little legs and circled it with his knife as though contemplating cutting it off, however not hurting Baby Will in the least. When the Indian saw the agonized fright of the mother he laughed, and surprised her by saying in English, 'Me no hurt boy! Me no hurt boy!'"

"In 1837 the Parrott and Bateman families, hearing much of the better opportunities, and pleasanter living conditions, to be enjoyed in the distant land of Ohio in the United States, decided on removing to that state. Consequently, in the Iast days of April, 1837, several families of them took passage by steamboat down the St. Lawrence River, through Lake Erie, to the town of Sandusky in Ohio. .... Of thisnjourney the children remembered little, except. that it was cold on the boat, with a raw wind blowing, and that Grandfather Parrott walked back and forth all night to keep warm, with little Matthew buttoned inside his coat. Near Sandusky, May 6, 1837, Hestor Ann Parrott was born."

"Arriving in Coshocton County, Ohio, John Parrott .... bought farms ner the village of Warsaw on the Walhonding River.... John Parrott, always religious minded and a zealous Methodist, received 'license to exhort'. This meant that in the absence of a regularly ordained minister he was authorized to conduct services. Family worship was a part of every day life in the home of John Parrott. Rugged regard for truth, uncompromising adherence to religious precepts, were instilled into the minds of the children with stern simplicity."

"As the boys grew to manhood, they began to talk of going west where land was cheap to make homes for themselves, as the older generation had done before them. ... The decision was reached by the group, and in 1850 several families of Batemans and Parrotts removed to Jackson County in Kansas, where they bought land, and where many of their descendants are living at present in and near the town of Holton."

"The journey from Ohio was made by way of the newly constructed railrond to St. Louis. At that point the party found itself members of a large company gathering there all intent upon seeking homes in the in the new country. They took passage by steamboat from St. Louis to Ft. Leavenworth, where United States troops were engaged in curbing the activities of the restless Indians. Ft. Leavenworth appeared small and indadequate; Indians were to be seen on all sides, sullenly watching the movements of the invaders, a sight which did not add to the comfort of the women of the party. At Ft. Leavenworth Grandfather Parrott hired teams and wagons to transport the family and goods still farther inland to the location he had chosen in Jackson County, Kansas. The Parrotts and Batemans were active in organizing the county, establishing a church and building schools. Here they settled permanently, lived, labored, prospered, married and died. One of the first enterprises upon
their arrival was the building of the first school house in the county- they built it of logs. In it Jane Parrott taught for a time and was the first teacher in the county."

John married Dorendo Bateman circa 1820. Dorendo was born on 26 Oct 1799 in Ireland and died on 13 Nov 1888 in Holton, Jackson Co., Kansas, at age 89. Other names for Dorendo were Dora Bateman and Lorinda Bateman.

    Notes: From History ... p 28

"Her father, Matthew Bateman, and a brother or cousin, Swanton Bateman, came to America in 1816 in the same sailing vessel, it is said, which brought the Parrott brothers, John and Matthew. The ship met rough weather and was blown from its course; six weeks were consumed in making the crossing. The party landed at St. Johns. The Bateman brothers remained near St. Johns, while the Parrotts settled on the Bay of Chaleur, near the village of Bathurst."

    Death of Mrs. Dora Parrott.

Dora Bateman was born in the county of Cork, Ireland, in the year 1799. In 1819, with her family, she emigrated to New Brunswick, and a year later she united in marriage to John Parrott, whose death was recorded in this paper two or three years ago. In 1837 Mr. and Mrs. Parrott moved to Ohio, and in 1859 to this county where they lived honored and respected by all until their Master was pleased to summon them to a better and more perfect life. Mrs. Parrott was a member of the Methodist church seventy years, and those who knew her and her devoted husband will bear THE RECORDER out in asserting that the church had few if any more zealous, faithful, consistant workers in the vineyard of the Lord. Mrs. Parrott was taken sick with neuralgia some ten days ago at the residence of her son-in-law, Mr. Vic. Wheeler, where she has been making her home, and died Tuesday of this week. The funeral services will take place at 2 p.m. to-day at the Methodist church. Rev. Wm. Friend will deliver a discourse.

The Holton Recorder, 15 Nov 1888

    Notes: From History of ....

"This pleasant cottage home was saddened and darkened by the tragic death of the firstborn, Matthew, a boy whose death proved his worth. The children were playing on the beach near their home, under the edge of the overhanging cliff. Suddenly Matthew saw a huge boulder slipping downward and that one of the younger children was in its path. He leaped to the child and pushed it out of danger, but in doing so was himself struck down. The screams of the children brought their uncle Matthew Parrott, who was working nearby in the clearing. He picked up the boy and ran with him to the house, but death had been instantaneous. Other childrren came into the home, but none was as gentle or as beloved as Matthew.
Another son was born a few years later, and he was given the name of Mattew in remembrance of the little lad who had given his life
    for another."

Elizabeth married Norman Wheeler, son of Wheeler, on 30 Jul 1863 in Jackson Co., Kansas. Norman was born on 20 Mar 1839 in West Carlisle, Coshocton Co., Ohio and died in 1919 in Denver, Denver Co., Colorado, at age 80.

16 F    xiii. Martha M. Parrott was born on 10 Nov 1842 in New Brunswick, Canada and died on 12 Apr 1909 in Holton, Jackson Co., Kansas, at age 66.

    Notes: DRAKE
Martha M. Parrott was born in Warsaw, Ohio, November 10, 1842, and died Monday morning, April 12, 1909, making her age 66 years, 5 months and 2 days.

She was of a family of thirteen children, but two of whom are now living. Fifty years ago today her father, John Parrott, arrived in Holton, she having lived in this community ever since.

In doing her share toward making this what was then a new country, what it is today she has done it nobly and well, always in her best judgement representing the cause of Right, in His name and with an eye single to His glory. With her sister Anna she assisted in teaching the FIRST school ever taught in Holton.

On the mornging of August 24, 1862, she was united in marriage to Geo. W. Drake and in the afternoon of the same day was received into full membership of the Methodist Episcopal church, and has been a most devoted, faithful member. As many here can testify today her Christ and His teachings, her church and its principles, stood paramount to all else in the world.

The third day after her marriage, Mr. Drake enlisted in the Civil War, remaining away from his bride three years. The quiet, patient suffering she endured during these long, dark years of conflict will be one of the stories that can never be told.

She was the mother of three boys and six girls, two boys in infancy and a daughter in young womanhood, having preceded her to the land of glory. Those who remain of this family so devoted to her are Susie D. Allen, Minneapolis, Minn., Robert Z. Drake, Omaha, Nebr., Margaret M. Buckner, Cedar Falls, Iowa; Katharine D. Schoonmaker, Mercedes, Texas, Martha D. Flood, Mayfield, Kentucky; and Nellie D. Slaughter, who still resides in Holton.

In her early married life she took two orphan boys, from a New York Orphan's HOme, to rear, one of whom has long since gone heavenward, and one we have with us today. A little later she made a place for five others orphans, a sister's children, and her home was theirs until they had homes of their own.

So her life has been one of continually "doing things" full of sacrifice and sweetest devotion, to all and for all with whom she came in contact. The victory is hers, the crown is own; her good deeds, the fruits of her busy life, will always live after her. Truly she can say with the great Apostle Paul, "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith, Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day and not to me only, but unto all them that love his appearing."

The funeral services were held from the Methodist church Tuesday afternoon at 2:30, conducted by Rev. J.S. Ford. The floral offerings were many and very beautiful.

Her last illness was protracted and painful, but she was patient and enduring and bore abundant testimony to the saving grace of her Lord. Her beautiful Christian life is a rich legacy to her children. The funeral services were held in the Methodist Episcopal church in Holton, Sunday afternoon, conducted by her pastor, Rev. S.J. Heaton, D.D., who spoke tender words of appreciation of the character of the deceased, after which the body, followed by a concourse of friends, was conveyed to the cemetery and committed to the grave, there to rest until the Resurrection day.

    5. Captn John Bateman Parrott (John2, Matthew1) was born on 13 Oct 1821 in New Brunswick, Canada and died on 10 Sep 1908 in Leavenworth Co., Kansas, at age 86.

Notes: The End of a Long Life.
Captain John Bateman Parrott died at the Soldier's Home in Leavenworth, Kansas, on Thursday, September 10th, at the age of 87 years. A year ago last August the veteran was taken, at this own request, to the Home. He enjoyed the surroundings, was contented to mingle with the boys of the "little bronze button" and there he remained until old age claimed its own, without making a farewell visit to Paola, where he spent nearly 50 years of his life. He recently expressed a desire to come to Paola for a short visit, but before his plans could be put into execution, he was taken to his death-bed.

Captain Parrott was an interesting character. He was born in Canada, near St. Johns, New Brunswick. That was in 1812. He was not a particularly auspicious entry into existence, as the lap of luxury was not destined to rear this new arrival, nor was he even a distant relative of Dame Fortune. His father, a minister of solemn mein, was of limited circumstances and the boy became used to hardships in early life. When yet a lad, his parents moved to Coshocton, Ohio, and rented a farm nearby. Here John was furnished an abundance of labor for one of his years and a limited amount of freedom. His dreams of life were far different from this and the age of 21 found him returning to the place of his birth. Here he entered college and took a complete course in civil engineering. After leaving college, Mr. Parrott struck out for himself, and, while still a young man, was given the contract to construct a railroad from Akron to Coshocton, Ohio. This he did, after a two year's struggle with strikers. This unsuccessful venture left him penniless and in debt.

In 1844, he married Miss Eliza Beggs and the two came west 12 years later. After farming a year at Des Moines, Iowa, Mr. Parrott entered the service of the government as a civil engineer, and he laid out the Russian colony that is still at Holton, Kansas. After completing this work, he came to Paola and located here a few months before the Civil war broke out. When it began in earnest, he joined company B., 11th Kansas volunteer infantry, and went to the front, This company, of which Mr. Parrott was captain, did excellent service in Colorado, Kansas and Arkansas, and he was wounded in the battle of Prairie Grove.

Since the war, he was a United States Revenue collector, United States Marshal, and at one time was surveyor of the county. Eight children were born to Captain Parrott, all of whom are dead, with the exception of Deck, and his whereabouts are unknown.

In 1903, Captain Parrott, who had long since been left alone, and Mrs. Samuel Gilman were married. Each was over 80 years of age. She died in June, 1907, and the old veteran went to the Soldiers' Home, where he passed on last Thursday.

John married Eliza C. Beggs on 20 Mar 1848 in Coshocton Co., Ohio. Eliza was born on 16 Mar 1831 in Coshocton Co., Ohio and died on 19 Jan 1902 in Tryon, Lincoln Co., Oklahoma, at age 70.

Notes: Mrs. Eliza C. Parrott, wife of Capt. J.B. Parrott, died at her home at Tryon, Oklahoma, last Sunday, the 19th Inst. aged 71 years, 10 months and 3 days. The funeral took place on Tuesday, the 21st, interment in the Tryon cemetery. Besides her husband, she leaves two children, Mrs. John S. Beeson, of Paola, and John B. Parrott, of White Oaks, New Mexico. Seven children, including the mother of Mrs. S.O. Rainey and Mrs. David Wilgus, of Paola, are dead.

Mrs. Parrott was born in Coshocton county, Ohio, March 16th, 1831. At an early day she came to Kansas with her husband and for 30 years made Paola her home. They moved to Oklahoma in 1893. She was a good woman, who was highly respected by all who knew her. Borne down with time and toil she gave up, worn out and weary of life's fitful struggle, to peacefully sleep the sleep that knows no waking.

18 M    i. Matthew Asbury Parrott was born on 10 Mar 1849 in Warsaw, Coshocton Co., Ohio and died on 1 Feb 1876 in Paola, Miami Co., Kansas, at age 26.

Notes: PARROTT-On the night of Feb.1, 1876, of congestion of the lungs, Matthew Asbury Parrott, aged 26 years.

During the night, while the storm was raging without which was to change an almost May day into the coldest one of the winter, the Spirit of Matthew Asbury Parrott, son of J.B. and E.C. Parrott, of this city, was slowly gliding away to that world where storms never come and changes never plague. Matthew Parrott was born in Coshocton county, Ohio, on the 10th of March, 1849; hence when he died he was 27 years of age, lacking 39 days. He moved with this parents to this State in 1857, and in the year 1870 he entered the well known drug strore of Price & Hedges, in Paola, where he remained two years, whe, his health failing him, he was compelled to quit his employers, much to their regret, and seek a more genial climate. He traveled in Texas and Indian Territory, but failed to find that relief which he so earnestly desired, when he returned to the residence of his parents, in Paola, saddened by the conviction that earth with all its joys must soon be relinquished forever. About five days before his death he was attacked with pneumonia, to which is feeble constitution quickly succumbed. Before his death, he sent for father Taylor, who, forthwith, obeyed the summons and remained by his bedside until life's fitful fever was over, and the last feeble spark had ebbed away. He was a good fellow, and may friends unite their voices with his relatives in bewailing their sad bereavement. W.H. Browne.

Notes: The death of Mrs. Ellen Glendora Beeson, wife of John S. Beeson, occurred at St. Margaret's hospital, Kansas City, Kansas, Wednesday, February 10, of tuberculosis. Always frail, she was in extremely poor health the past year, and for the past two months was confined to her bed, being taken to hospital a week before her death.

Mrs. Beeson was a daughter of Capt. J.B. Parrott of Paola, who survives her and the age of 85 years and who is the only living member of a large family, all his children being dead. She was born in Holton, Kas., March 5, 1861, and came to Paola with her parents when she was a child.

She was reared in Paola, attended the public schools here, grew to womanhood among us, and March 1, 1893, was married to Mr. Beeson. She devoted her life to the children of her sister, who was Mr. Beeson's first wife. She was a noble woman, kind-hearted, true and faithful, and all her relatives and friends mourn. Notes: KANSAS HEROINE DEAD
Paola, June 26. - Mrs. Serena Parrott, aged 86 years, died here Monday night. Her death was caused by a fracture of the hip a week ago. Mrs. Parrott was formerly Mrs. Samuel Gilman and well known along the Eastern border of Kansas. Her first husband was a mail carrier between Kansas City and Fort Scott before the Kansas City Fort Scott & Memphis railroad was built. She often made the trip when he feared an attack or robbers, always took her rifle with her, and saved the government hundreds of dollars by her courage. She and Captain Parrott were married four years ago.

    SHE LIVED HERE 53 YEARS.
The One Woman To Brave A Perilous Journey.

Mrs. Serena Parrott, wife of Captain J. B. Parrott, died at her home, on West Kakaskia street, at 6 o'oclock last Monday evening. She has been a resident of Paola nearly 53 years.

Mrs. Parrott was born in New Hampshire and was 86 years old this month. Four years ago she was married to Captain J.B. Parrott. E.H. Wilson, then Probate judge, smiled when he asked the bride her age, and she replied: "The Captain and I are the same age-- both 82."

Mrs. Parrott is better known to the earlier settlers as Mrs. Samuel Gilman. Mr. Gilman was mail carrier from Kansas City to Fort Scott, before the old Kansas City Fort Scott & Memphis railway, now the Frisco, was built. Mrs. Gilman was one of the first women who would take a seat besides her husband on the stage, and with an old Sharpe rifle, look with careful eye to the undulating plains ahead of them.

On these trips along the eastern border line, the mail carrier and his young wife had many adventures. There were Indians, friendly and unfriendly; adventurers who were returning from a disappointed and tiresome trip to the gold fields of California; border ruffians who made lawlessness their standard, and criminals their heroes.

There are many who have gone before Mrs. Parrott who could recall a kindly deed: a helping hand and an ecouraging word from the "mail carrier's wife," that came to them almost in the extreme of despair.

She was laid to rest in Oak Grove cemetery, Tuesday afternoon, at 4 o'clock. The only surviving child, the one to whom was given the name of the mother, could not be located. The Reverend W.S. Lowe, of the Christian church, officiated at the grave.

-- We have at our office, through the kindness of Mr. R.B. Judging from the amount, 10 oz., 15 pwts., in the shape of a small brick, said to be taken from a few pounds of ore, the Original is about the richest ledge in Deer Lodge county, and promises to out-strip any other in that country.

Des Moines, Iowa, Aug. 26.- Robert Parrott, discoverer of the famous Parrott copper mine at Butte, Mont., died here today in moderate circustances at the age of 75. As a young man Parrott went west and while prospecting discovered the great copper mine which bears his name. His discovery started a speculative fever, which makes possible such stories as Thomas Lawson's "Frenzied Finance." Parrott did not profit greatly by his discovery, and his estate will not exceed $6,000. He sold his mine in a few years to Marcus Daly.

    Notes: K.L.PARROTT NOT "MISSING"

    COMPANY'S SECRETARY DENIES RUMORED CRISIS.

Frederick Terrill Says President of Carriage Concern, Has Gone Away to Recuperate from Physical Exhaustion, the Result of Working Early and Late.

The absence from the city of Karey L. Parrott, president of the Parrott Carriage Manufacturing Company, South Main street, corner Tenth, gave rise last night to rumours that he had been "missing" for nearly a month that the affairs of the concern were in bad shape. Such a report was submitted by The Times to investigation. Mr. Parrott's house, No. 917 South Hope street, was closed, but the secretary-treasurer of the company, Frederick A. Terrill, was found at his home, No. 821 West Seventeenth street. He said:

"It is true that Mr. Parrott is out of the city, but it is not true that is is 'missing,' or that the affairs of the Parrott Carriage Manufacturing Company are in any but good shape. Mr. Parrott, accompanied by his wife, left Los Angeles a week ago last Saturday. He is a man who throws his whole being into his business, and works early and late, until physical exhaustion forces him to 'lay off.' That is the case now; Mr. Parrott has gone away for rest and recuperation. I do not know when he will be back-he himself did not know how long he should stay when he went away, and I do not care to state where he is; he does not wish to be intruded upon by any business matters.

"As for the affairs of the Parrott company, they are in first-class shape. The accounts are well in hand, the books are complete and accurate, and if we decided to go out of business tomorrow we would be in a position to pay every dollar we owe."

In reply to a further question Mr. Terrill, who is in full charge of the company's affairs in the absence of the president, said"

"No, I do not care either to deny nor affirm that the company has 'passed through a crisis.' Everthing is straight and in good order, and I see no necessity for saying more at this time."
